Picking a favorite painting in JB and M’s home is a treat.
Not only have they collected wonderful works from other artists, M has filled
their contemporary home with her own pieces. A self taught artist, M started painting 50
years ago while raising a young family. She needed art for her walls, so she began copying from books and
museums. I’m so pleased to share JB and
M’s home and a few special paintings.

In case you missed it, I recently featured their beloved gardens. You can see that post here.
Rustic oak beams reclaimed from a barn and antique French fireplace add to the warmth of the sunny breakfast room.
A panoramic view of the grounds. I love how the vibrant oil painting from French artist Roger Muhl (1929-2008) continues the landscape inside.
Muhl worked in the representational style, and his pieces capture simple shapes with vivid colors and light.
Two of M’s paintings propped on the mantel. The trumeau is original to the limestone fireplace.
Another Muhl behind a pair of chairs upholstered in the palest blue linen.
Shortly after the Swedish Rococo armchairs arrived from Tone on Tone, JB and M decided to bleach and grey-wash their pine floors. Hanging in the living room is the very first Muhl painting they acquired from David Findlay Gallery in the 1960s. Muhl knew and was friends with 3 generations of the Findlay family.
The wormy chestnut paneled library is furnished with English antiques.
A luminous Muhl painting brightens the paneled library, which JB and M use as their winter study.
3 paintings by M hang over an English chest.
This is my favorite painting by M. I love how intently the pup is sitting, and the bit of mischief on the faces of the boys.
Speaking of pups, this is Tiggy after dinner – rub my belly please 🙂
Copper pots and vineyard baskets in the kitchen were brought back from France.
M hand painted, glazed and fired all the tiles in the kitchen.
A season of garden flowers arranged by M.
What a gorgeous house. The Muhl paintings are wonderful and they may just inspire a new palette for me. I am also enamored with the hand-painted tiles. Great personal touch.
Loi, this home is so, so welcoming and warm. Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us. I love M's paintings and the tiles are beautiful! Not to leave out…the floral arrangements….gorgeous!
The Swedish Rococo chairs are perfect and I love the finish for the floors….
The breakfast room ……so charming.
What a home and the love they share continues inside!
Loi shame on you I think you are intent on making a grown woman cry, what a house, or should I say 'a home' for it is a home in the best possible way, gorgeous chalky colours which give an air of tranquility. I love everything, the quality of light, furniture, artwork, copper pans in the kitchen and of course let us not forget Tiggy. Question is when are they moving out so I can move in? (I wish)
JB and M's home is just as attractive from the inside as the out. I can well understand their attraction to the Muhl paintings. I like the simple, but complimentary colours of his pallet and how he has used them in such a bold dramatic way.
LOVE their home, Loi! Lovely just as the gardens are.
The collection of art is stunning, and I have to admit my heart melts when I see copper cookware and corgis!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful home.
Happy Sunday.

What a charming and comfortable and airy home. I love the M. painting with the boys. The floors are wonderful, as is the art collection. What a lovely home. And Tiggy is too sweet. Thanks for sharing Loi. They sound like quite the interesting couple with such an interesting home.
xo Terri
What a terrific house! I love the art and the colours.
xo
I see the inside is as lovely as the outside of this house. I love the gorgeous collection of copper pots and those sweet blue and white tiles in the kitchen. I agree with you about the little painting of the boys and the dog……precious. Tiggy is a scene stealer 🙂
Thanks for sharing, Loi.
Terri
M is quite talented! I love the part about her copying artwork when she was first starting out. Reminds me of someone. Oh yeah.. Me! Their home is beautiful.
Keri
Hi Loi, thanks so much for your comments as always! I am heading out to the barn now, will say hi to the horses for you:) I need to revisit this post. I love art in a home as it adds such a great layer physically and spiritually. M's work is beautiful, and hangs well beside the Muhl's. Life is lived well in this home, so great that you are a part of it! xob
What a beautiful home, it is very warm and inviting, I love that M. made her own art, it gives that personal touch to the home that every house needs I think. This must be one special couple!
Thanks for sharing!
Inga
I would like to see more of M's paintings. The dog one immediately made me think of the Penrod stories, if they had taken place a few generations earlier. By the way, what is that rather sepulchral-looking sculpture on the cabinet near the Swedish chairs? I love the cool effect of the light colors and floors, and also how the Roger Muhl paintings do a great job of introducing and focusing color into the rooms.
–Road to Parnassus
Hi P – Thanks! I'll have to share more of M's paintings in the future. She is currently working on one with a group of hound dogs. The sculpture is a carved marble recumbent animal. We can't make it out as it has been so weathered from the elements. Loi
What a lovely home. Thanks to you and the homeowners for sharing it with us. I love the photo of Tiggy – sweet!
Claudia
Thanks for the introduction to Muhl, and I am charmed by the way in which the homeowner has incorporated both her own art and her favorites from others throughout her home. I agree, art definitely enlivens any home, as long as the homeowner hangs what they love!
– Holly
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh….it's just simply wonderful.
The colors in the art ( both professional and homeowner), the foil of the pale grey floors to that art,
the breathing space between pieces of furniture-and last but not least, Tiggy, the queen of it all!
Thanks to you-and your subjects-for opening this beautiful home to all of us. Great Sunday arvo reading 🙂
Such a lovely home, Loi! Smitten by the fireplace, the grey washed floors and those Swedish armchairs. Tiggy is so cute! Thanks for the tour. Hope you are having a great Sunday!
Lovely paintings . I am always attracted to paintings with people in it, so I agree with your choice of painting with boys. I enjoyed visiting TONE ON TONE . This is the most beautiful antique store I have ever visited. Thanks for your time during my visit. Ironstone bowl looks lovely in my house.

Wonderful to have a new friend in Atlanta!!

very very lovely…and I like that the art is more than just paintings on the wall. I see many other forms of it in this lovely room
I love the Corgi rug! Where can I get one of those??
Patti
I love the paintings in the house, too. Those two are surely talented, painting those tiles, and such. Very impressive and a labor of love that house is. Such a beautiful story and tour of their gardens, home and lives. Thanks. Loi!

what a gift to have such a friend…talented gardener and artist. Love the golden tones of the painting with the chesnut paneling
Thank you for sharing this, dear Loi!
M is truly gifted. This house is so beautiful…and her paintings amazing…but I am in love with the tiles!
She is quite an artist!
And Roger Muhl…oh, I have loved his paintings from the moment I first saw them…
Are you familiar with Alexandra Stoddard? She often writes of her deep friendship with Muhl…unfortunately he is now gone…but what a stunning body of work he has left for the world.
Ok, I can now rub Tiggy's belly 😉
Have a fabulous week!
xoxo,

I'm in awe of people with artistic talents. Whether it be painting, drawing, music or drama.
To hang a picture that I had painted would be thrilling.
Thank you for sharing the interior shots of M and JB's home.
Inside and out, a truly beautiful home.
Hope you have a lovely day,

Hi Loi, This is a truly beautiful home, obviously well-loved and lived in. The paneling in the winter study and its sunny yellow painting are gorgeous. Hope you are well!
xo,

How good it is to have creative friends! M's artwork has great charm, and it's clear that she's studied and observed with a perceptive eye. Extra kudos to those who are self-taught. I really like Muhl's work, too — those punches of color bring additional sunlight regardless the time of day or weather!
What a lovely home, I can tell it has evolved over time and has many layers to make it so inviting. Loved seeing each and every piece of art. I can imagine sitting there for hours visiting with good friends.
Happy week,
Kathysue

The paintings are lovely and all of M's DIY projects inspire! You didn't give us any more gossip but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that she met Julia Childs on one of her French copper pot shopping soirees.
p.s. Tiggy looks like he's getting ready to watch cartoons 🙂
Hey Donna – I'll have to work on M for more gossip! 😉 Cheers, Loi

Hi Loi,
What a beautiful home. That fireplace!! Those beams! The art! Love the warmth from all the stunning artwork. And, I love that they grey washed the floors. I'll bet that made a tremendous difference in the feeling of the space.
Always fun to peek into special homes, such as this!
xoxo Elizabeth
Oh Loi…another lovely post. I LOVE the grey washed floors…I am looking to find a dining "barn type" table in the same color. But quite honestly, the library is what captivated me. So comfy, so homey, so classic without being boring.
Such an inviting home! I love the combination of the beams and washed floors against the brightly colored artwork. What a personal & beautiful collection.
Love that fireplace too! Those tiles are really cool, wow! Lovely work! Thank you for the tour and art history lesson! xxo Monica

I wish she was an artist in my shop! Her home is lovely and you have certainly added your incredible touches to it! What a great thing to be able to have you as their designer! I have no idea how I missed this post, must be that that the heat of summer is frying my brain. In any case…this house is FABULOUS! I absolutely love the mix of the styles of furniture and antiques, from the French limestone fireplace to the wormwood, the traditional old world antiques of England and Sweden to the spectacular contemporary art. Add to it the gardens and the grounds, this house is a masterpiece!

this is the most glorious home!!! actually everything you feature is really delightful. I especially love the relaxed vibe in this home though….all those textures and patinas. Those slouchy linen chairs are so inviting and perfect tone setters, like a deep breath.
Beautiful banner at your site as well, I am reminded of some wall paintings by the Mexican artist, Diego Rivera, such as
