Hello ~ Happy December! I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving.
This Thanksgiving was even more meaningful for us. After searching for a few years, we are grateful to have finally closed on a family vacation home. I have to say the search was exciting but quite challenging and frustrating as many of the properties we loved were out of our budget or had higher offers. Our focus had been on older homes that needed work and a bit of TLC.
So where is our new place? It is located in historic Castine – a small and very special coastal town in Maine. I look forward to writing a proper post on Castine, but for now, enjoy the mini pictorial tour below.
We are thankful to Karen Koos of Saltmeadow Properties for assisting us in Castine. Her expertise, guidance and patience proved invaluable. If you need a fabulous realtor for either a purchase or rental on the Blue Hill Peninsula, please contact Karen. Many thanks, Karen, for finding us our home!
Our home, built in 1804, has certainly seen its share of ups and downs. During the Victorian Period the house was renovated, and the ceilings were raised on the top floor with a new mansard roof added. Later in the 20th century, it sat uninhabited for nearly 50 years. Then it was extensively but sympathetically renovated, expanded and modernized 15 years ago. But, alas, the house once again is in need of attention.
We intend to gently repair and attend to important issues immediately – postpone other projects until resources become available. Our goal is to spend parts of the year in Maine, and tackle a project each season.
Despite all the renovations, much of the early architecture, charm and charecter remain true. We love the exterior’s quiet beauty and lack of pretense – much like Maine itself. And once inside, there is a sense of warmth, comfort and history, but not perfection.
Here are photos of the exterior:
Warmly,
Loi
Congratulations, Loi!! I'm so happy for you. Your new house is lovely. Unpretentious, simple and symmetrical houses are my favorites. And Federal style is at the top of my list. Castine looks quite charming — you must be very excited! I cannot wait to follow along and watch the progress.
I'm thrilled for you Loi – my heartfelt congratulations! What a wonderful early Christmas present for you and Tom. I am in love with the architectural features and am sure I would be up late into the night dreaming and planning renovations and interiors. How exciting! So happy you will be sharing this journey with your readers. A perfect home in an ideal location..much to look forward to! ~ Julie
Oh my, how exciting, Loi. This home is going to be fabulous! I can't wait to enjoy the process along with you. In the meantime have a wonderful holiday season. My favorite time of the year. I hate the season seems to be shorter this year.
"Quiet beauty and lack of pretense"–such a fitting description of Maine and your gorgeous new home. Congratulations! What a spectacular new project for you two to take on together. As someone who has spent many summers and other vacations in Maine, I am so happy you will be preserving a piece of the history there. And thank you for the introduction to Castine–I've never been but it looks beyond charming.
oh wow! the house is going to be so amazing- i love the old painting which depicts it in yellow! can't wait to see what your color choices are. and the town looks so charming- it's like a dream! i am so happy for you and tom!
Loi, I can see it already tweaked with your masterful touch; it will be a masterpiece. Congratulations on finding a quaint place in cooler Maine to escape the humid, hot summers in DC! Great choice!
Loi, your new home is lovely and I know with your fabulous design talent will only become more beautiful! I can't wait to see what you do. For some reason I was picturing Farrow & Ball James White, with French Gray shutters and a Dix blue front door.
Thanks so much for the paint suggestions, Lisa! I'll check out those colors.
WOW, Congratulations!!! Castine is such a wonderful town. We're retiring to Maine in 5 – 6 years – can't wait. I'll be glued to your blog following all your Maine adventures!
I hope you all will consider retiring in Castine. We can be neighbors 🙂
How exciting! You are going to have so much fun with your future projects and we are going to have so much fun seeing what you accomplish. Congratulations!
Congratulations Loi! How exciting for you and I can't wait to see the interior.
Congratulations Loi! I am so happy for you. I love your new house. Looks so big! The town is so quaint and very American. Looking forward to see you decorate your new house and to see the town through your Blog.
Oh Loi, It is simply perfect! Double french doors have always said 'welcome' to me and have been a forever favorite of mine. Mansard roofs are so strong and period. My sister and her husband have a mansard roof that I just swoon over. Your new house is expansive and stately. Despite it needing a good bath and coat of paint the color is calming and perfect for Maine.
How incredibly exciting! As you know my home is old as well (though not nearly as old as yours!). There is something so wonderful about owning and caring for an older home. It is a great responsibility and daunting at times due to the sheer sense of preserving such a piece of history. You my friend will do this house justice and it is so lucky you have come along.
Fondly-Lisa
Absolutely, Lisa! There is a tremendous responsibility in taking care of an old home. We intend to be respectful stewards.
Congratulations Loi! Such a quaint and historic town. Can't wait to see the inside but enjoy every minute of your new home and adventure!
Congratulations Loi! How very exciting! Your new home is lovely and I am so looking forward to seeing what changes you make! The village in Maine is charming too! I am excited for you to share more of that as well! Cheers!
I'm so excited for you…it looks like a charming home…I cant wait to see what your going to do it….your so talented and I know its going to look wonderful!
Congratulations, Loi! I don't know this town but know the area a little bit. I have an old friend with the sweet little place in Searsport where the ocean breezes billow through the curtains all summer long. Your place looks like it has some wonderful exterior bones which you'll whip into shape in no time. I'm eager to see what lies behind those double doors.
How exciting. You and Tom have found a wonderful dream to build on! Congratulations. Thank you for sharing with all of us as you proceed and create your beautiful home.
I will be looking forward to following your adventure!
I just found your blog and am your latest follower! I cannot wait to watch your renovation unfold, what a beautiful home in a most charming town!!
XOXO,
The Glam Pad
Oh I absolutely cannot wait to see what sort of magic you do to this house. It's just lovely and so full of character. Congratulations!
Congratulations! What a charming home in a quintessential Maine village!! Here is to many happy days there!
How terrific. You must be so pleased, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey of restoration, and given your exquisite taste, make a very fine job of it. Shall look forward to following your progress.
The house and town are so charming! I am feeling a bit envious over here! Being built in 1804, I can only imagine all the charm and character the house has. I am so looking forward to seeing the inside and following along in your renovations. I am so excited for you!
Dear Loi,
This is very exciting news my friend. I love the symmetry of this house and I like the fact that you are living in an area where there are many similar houses. Does the house have a heritage listing? And if it does will this affect what you can and can't do?
Your plans have me itching to get our own plans under way but sometimes we must be patient I guess. I will be following the course of this house as it is 'sorted' out under your skillful hands and expert eye!
Bye for now
Kirk
Kirk, our house is in the historic district, and exterior changes, which we won't be making, require approval.
Congrats on the already beautiful and charming house in the picturesque and pretty Castine! What a unique name for a town, and I'm sure you and Tom will 'cast' your own personal 'spell' on this gorgeous property, magically reviving its 'sleeping' potential!
Can't wait to see photos of the interiors!!
xo

Beautiful house in a delightful spot. It has Loi written all over it even before you commence your improvements. It will be such an interesting project for you both, and I know it is going to look superb.
Loi, Congratulations! It's really charming. The greys, ivory, stone of the exterior make me think of your antiques. And how wonderful to see a painting of the house from the 1800s.
Oh my gosh!! This is sooooo exciting…what a beautiful stately home! It is picture perfect and I cannot wait to see what you do with it, the town looks beyond charming. Congrats, this is the best holiday gift ever!!
I am so late and have been thinking of you dearest Loi! BUT WHAT A FUN AND FABULOUS SURPRISE to learn that you have acquired a most GORGEOUS HOME! Loi, this is perfect for you all!
This is the perfect home for you. I know how much you love Maine (so do we!) and look at the surrounding areas! So Main St. America, so full of history, and your new home? Gray tones! We know you are going to fix this up to perfection, and you know that I am one of your biggest fans.
Dearest Loi, I wish you and Tom and the rest of your loved ones the most magical Christmas; this new house however, is the biggest Christmas present I've ever seen, and I bet I know what you'll have on your mind this holiday: DECORATING!
Big hugs my friend. Anita
Loi, how fabulous! I am so happy for you!! The facade of the house is beautiful and has a great feeling – very serene. I can't wait to see what you do with the interiors. I have always heard from friends that Castine is lovely. And there is something so special about having a place of one's own to get away to – I have always felt that about our cottage in RI – the time there feels so different from our regular life. It is magical somehow. xoxo, Phyllis
I am so excited for you and Tom! That is such a lovely setting and I can see how your vision will translate to that house.
Congratulations, Loi. I am eager to see what you do in the garden. Lots of interesting opportunities. Have a great holiday!
It looks wonderful to me. I am looking forward to seeing your posts on this home. I love mansard roofs! The front door is to die for!
Shut up. Boy am I looking forward to seeing the magic you work on this place:) Congrats.
Loi, Congratulations! It's really charming. The greys, ivory, stone of the exterior make me think of your antiques. I am eager to see what you do in the garden. Lots of interesting opportunities. Have a great holiday!
Welcome to New England!! We're almost neighbors Loi!! ;);) Love your new antique home and can't wait to watch you put your magic touch on it. So excited for you (and the house) – Congratulations to you and Tom! xxoj.
p.s. I am green with envy that there is an antique painting of your house- what a gift to know what it looked like back when!
Oh Loi, You have found yourselves a little treasure. I have house envy!
Well done, congratulations and I cannot wait to see the changed you make to a wonderful canvas.
So excited for you.

Congratulations to you and Tom, Loi. What a stately house–it is sure to become a lovely home with your expert touch. Looking forward to following the renovation process. I just looked up Castine on the map and it is really far north–what an escape this will be for you. I imagine it will soon be a beautiful winter wonderland.

Hello Loi, Great news! The house is perfect as it has many original features, and also lots of room for a variety of projects. Castine is such an historic area–it seems to come up in any discussion of Maine's treasures.
I too am looking forward to further details, plans, and revelations.

Dear Loi,
This is so exciting, and I look forward to watching you bring this handsome house back to its full glory. You're lucky that your new house has such "good bones!" I'm guessing that you won't be un-doing too much!
Dear Loi,

Best wishes to you and Tom. You are going to have so much fun with this project. I'm looking forward to following along!
Suzanne
How awesome is that! Congratulations, Loi! So excited for you and Tom!
I am so happy for you Loi! Your house is wonderful! We used to travel to Maine twice a year on Antiquing jaunts back when we had our shop! I absolutely adore Maine! Do I see a location for a future shop perhaps?
Cindy, no plans yet for a second shop 🙂
Buying a second home is SOOOOOOO exciting.
When I looked at the painting of the house in it's original form, I saw that it used to have 8 over 8 windows, not the arts & crafts style it now is wearing, are you going to restore it to its former style?
Good eye, Betsy. We won't be changing the windows.
OMG!!! I am so happy for you and what a gem you found! Federal rocks!!! I know that you are going to restore it to its former glory and beyond. Your neighbors are so, so lucky! Can't wait to see it all! xoxo
when i awoke this morning i had no idea i was going to fall in love. if i were to close my eyes and imagine the perfect east coast town, maine in particular, this by first glance appears to be all that and more. cannot wait for further posts loi. your new home, in yours and tom's hands will be stunning, congratulations!

-Revi
Congratulations! This looks like the perfect place to live and love! I'm looking forward to look inside! Castine must be an enchanting land!
Congratulations. This is going to be such fun for you and all of us as we watch you transform this home. Castine is the kind of small town that makes me wish I lived in Maine instead of Georgia.
Loi, I am so excited for you! Congratulations! Your new home is beautiful! I haven't been to Maine and many years but absolutely loved everything about it when my husband and I traveled there for our first wedding anniversary.
Allison
Congratulations on finding your new home Mr Loi. I feel that big renovation adventures are afoot. I'm looking forward to joining you on your new journey, how exciting is this!
Loi, this is very exciting news. Congratulations! I keep thinking, "what a lucky house!" because I'm sure that with your love, care and taste it will emerge looking as good – or better – than new. I don't know my Maine geography very well, but it looks like you've chosen a charming spot. Here's to new beginnings and many wonderful Maine adventures to come – I think you'll need to learn how to catch lobsters and make blueberry jam!
Congratulations, Loi! Your new home is gorgeous & the town is darling! Can't wait to follow along and see all of the changes you make.
Congratulations -glad you finally found a place. It will be a fun project and I hope you share it all with us here!

Dear Loi
Castine is a beauty. Gracious and elegant. Congratulations. I am delighted for you. I will be looking forward to reading your chapters on how you will put your personality into this special house. I am curious as to the name "Castine" do you know its origin?
Wow, congratulations, open the champagne.
Helen xx
Helen – Castine was named after Baron Jean Vincent d'Abbadie de Saint Castin during the French colonial period in the 17th century.

As a duo that is still working on an 1808 Victorian vacation home (month 17, but who's counting) it is the most challenging and rewarding of projects. Thrilled to be along for the ride…

OMG, Loi, I love, love, love Castine, almost as much as Maine itself. Such an untouched Maine town!! Will definitely visit you there if you will allow. Is it to be a shop or strictly your sanctuary away from DC? I am so envious, and know with your touch the house will be a real charmer.
Keep us posted.

Congratulations, Loi!! I'm so happy for you!! Such a lovely house!! Can`t wait to see the interior!
Blessings,
Vesna
Hi Loi, I was so excited to see this post as I said in my email! Sorry it took me so long to get over to comment. And I had to Google to see where Castine is…amazing location. My mother in New Brunswick is closer to your new house than you are. Haha. So we will have to come visit (just kidding…I promise not to show up next summer). I cannot wait to see what you do with the place. I love the double front doors and it looks like it's just loaded with possibilities and also a very large home. How exciting!!!
We adored the Maine coast, from Camden to Mount Desert Island, so I imagine your little peninsula is just as perfect.
xo Terri
Hello Loi!
I adore Maine and your new home is beyond beautiful- I so look forward to seeing what magic you will create there! So many joyous times ahead for you!!!
And thank you for your very kind words regarding my father- I so much appreciate it.

Best wishes! What a great Christmas present – and I just know you will add fabulous and charming touches. Castine looks as though it suites you well. Best of luck Loi, I am anxious to watch as you make it your own!
Congratulations, Loi. How charming! I can't wait to see what exterior colors you choose. And, of course, dying to see the interior, both before AND after!
Loi,
I am so excited for you! It is beautiful and I cannot wait to see how it will look with your wonderful touch. Wishing you the very best this Holiday Season!
🙂 Christina
Congratulations! May you enjoy the house for years to come and have peace and warmth in there. It is a beautiful property that you have got. You must be excited to embark on the renovations and the decor project.
Best wishes.
This is a wonderful endeavor! You are such a good writer…"We love the exterior's quiet beauty and lack of pretense – much like Maine itself." Lovely.
We've been out of town, so I'm a little late in replying but I'm SO excited for you and Tom! I know this has been a dream for quite awhile and what a wonderful early holiday present!!!
xo Kat
Congratulations, Loi. The town and its location look stunningly beautiful. Your new home is lovely and I know you and Tom are going to make it into a gem.
XO, Victoria
What a wonderful Christmas present to yourselves! And what a lovely setting for a holiday home. You are just the right people to turn it into a loved and lived in home. Enjoy! x Sharon
Oh wow! I am so late to this wonderful announcement! Big Congrats to you and Tom! It is STUNNING!! I am so very happy for you! Love the pictures too. xx
Love the house, I didn't want to read the post because I thought you sold your home. So glad to see it was only a vacation house. Best of luck with this new adventure, cn't wait to see the changes.
Loi!! Wow! I'm so excited for you and Tom. I can just imagine the fun/work ahead BUT it will be a labor of love. The home is situated in the most exquisite spot and has such a lovely face. It's so much fun to learn about the history of an older home (if only the walls could speak!!). We have homes in Seattle that were built in the early 1900's. The various owners have done an unbelievable job of updating, but keeping some of the original architecture in tact. I'll be looking forward to seeing updates.
Hope you are enjoying the festivities of the season and not working too hard.
(sorry I'm late here.. my feedburner wasn't updating so I've missed some posts)
xxleslie
I am so excited to see what you have in store for this beautiful home!

Oh Loi, your choice was spot on! I am so impressed with the property and setting!!! How nice that you are heading North! Your vacation home looks like a perfect getaway, in a perfect setting. Small town life is the way to go! Congrats!

Can you tell me what is planted on either side of the walk in the last two photos? Such a good post. Good luck to you two.
Yes, those are hostas – not sure of the variety though. Thanks.
Thanks so much. I thought so but wasn't sure. Your posts are lovely to see and a pleasure to read.
Hi
I read your post and i appreciate your efforts. The information that you share in the above article is very nice and useful
Dear Loi,
I am new to your blog- love it- linked it to mine, see yesterdays' post. Your new house is fabulous! It has so much character. I used to live in DC. Where are you there? Did you know Tony Childs? Or Joe and Andy with the antiques shop there? I worked for some decorators in DC before I moved to New York. Please look at what I did with your post on the pair of beautiful bergeres and let me know what you think of it. Congrats again on your Castine castle!
