May is a marvelous month in DC! And a very busy one for gardeners. I’m spending what little free time I have in the garden: cutting back dead wood; pruning shrubs that were meant to be dwarf varieties for a city plot; fertilizing and reinvigorating plants that have seen sunnier days; weeding here and there; and just a lot of digging in the dirt!
So this will be a quick post to show you a pair of antique French bergeres that recently arrived in the shop. My upholsterer performed miracles as the chairs were a wreck. They are now in a heavy linen fabric with a flat tape trim in the same fabric, and the new down-and-feather seats are SOOO comfy. I think these are the perfect small-ish chairs!
Be back soon – xo Loi
At 27 1/4″ wide x 27″ deep x 37 1/2″ high, these are the perfect small-scaled comfy chairs!
Lovely downswept arms with scrolls and acanthus foliage. Pillow fabric is “Chou Chou” from Sister Parish.
Absolute perfection! xo beautiful!!
It is rare that chairs so beautiful actually look comfy, but these do! Have fun in the garden!
Hi, Loi,
These chairs look at once both so handsome and so comfortable! The cushions are the perfect complement.
What a beautifully appointed pair of bergeres. Perfection. I am sooooo into down everything – these look so inviting.
I have an almost exact pair – made to my spec here – in dark mahogany with Jim Thompson cream silk fabric. Great minds think alike?
I'd love to see your chairs, Columnist! I am a fan of Jim Thompson's silk fabrics!
Loi,
Wonderful set, handsome design and perfect choice of upholstery. Now go back and play in the dirt and plant, trim and enjoy the magnificent beauty you create.
Vera
So handsome! Adore the structural arms and just want to sink into that down cushion. Perfect chairs for anyone, anytime, anywhere.
Magnificent, Loi! My father was an upholsterer, and I loved watching him do his magic in the garage in his retirement years for special commissions. I wish I would have picked up on his skills, because I'd love to upholster a chair or two! These are divine designs, and in the signature gray. PERFECTION! Well, we are finally having great weather and I'm going to prune and weed this coming weekend, because like me, my plans took a beating this winter! ENJOY, MY FRIEND! Anita
Loi, I've been in the garden too trying to get everything spruced up. Your gorgeous yard and all the plants by color inspired me so very much! Now if I only had a green thumb like you.
These chairs are perfection because they are elegant, but look so comfy. I love the cushion and it's overstuffed look. It gives these such a casual air, for formal chairs. The fabric is beautiful. Adore them! Have a great week. xo
Beautiful chairs Loi! Thay are so elegant, and love the fabric! Enjoy your lovely garden!

They look the perfect chairs – elegant but also very comfortable. Did you take a 'before' photo? it would have been interesting to see them prior to your magic touches.
I deleted the before photos 🙁 Wasn't planning on blogging about them. Next time….
Gorgeous! You have exquisite taste!!!

Beautiful! The gorgeous cushions make them look so inviting.
I LOVE them and being just 4'11" tall they would fit me perfectly 🙂
Yes, they really are comfy for all sizes 🙂
the flat tape totally makes the chairs. wonderful eye, loi.
Beautiful details, Loi!

Loi, these chairs are stunning. Wow. I have a birthday coming up, I'm wondering if I could convince my husband that this pair needs to come live with us. I'd choose these over diamonds any day of the week. Hope your time in the garden pays off beautifully this summer – hope you will post more photo! Happy gardening!
I had to smile when you mentioned "acanthus"…."they say" that one gravitates to a certain aesthetic..and mine is acanthus and "Tudor rose." It "shows up" in every room somewhere. Those chairs would fit "perfectly." franki
Loi those chairs are just my "cup of tea"! Oh they would fit in our home perfectly.
Beautiful! Our parents collected French and English antiques when we lived in Europe and we're the proud owners of many pieces. There's nothing like giving something cherished a facelift (new paint and upholstery) so that it can last for generations to come. Love the clean, crisp linen you used on these chairs, Loi.

So charming and elegant…love the fabrics.
Hi Loi,
I'll throw my wellies in the car and be over to help in the garden in just a minute. 🙂 This time of year digging in the dirt is one of my favorite pastimes. Not too hot yet, not too cool, just right for tidying up.
I love the chairs and the down seats look inviting.
Enjoy the rest of your week, my friend.
Karen
Big love for those chairs!! my next house if I ever get a next house will definitely have a paler palette and a few of your pieces for sure!
They are a beautiful pair of chairs and meticulous work by your upholsterer. Nothing like down for comfort
Have a delightful week

I can see the cushy-ness of your gorgeous chairs Loi! And I spied those beautiful pillows too on IG earlier. I know how much you love your 'heaven-on-earth'garden Loi, so go ahead and spend all the time you can on it. It not only has given pleasure to you and Tom but to all of us who are lucky enough to know about and see it!
The chairs look gorgeous Loi. I like the natural colour of the material. It looks so chic and comfortable. Have a wonderful week.
Love, love. love these. Bergeres are my favorites.
Beautiful chairs Loi, love the flat tape trim. We are working in our back garden this week too- and when I say we, I mean a contractor and crew:). Lots of digging going on over here too! Ciao!
Loi, these chairs look fabulous! I would love to see a "before" photo! I hope that you are enjoying the time in your garden!
No before photos left – I deleted after the chairs came back. Next time I'll keep the before photos to share!
Love those ladies. Your upholsterer is fantastic!! I usually choose a tape finish, too.
xoxo Mary

Loi,
Oh my goodness, perfect timing, I have these exact same chairs at my upholsterer, this will be the third time they are getting upholstered and I would love to know the source for that lovely linen if you would not mind too much sharing that with me. I know that's not really "kosher" to ask someone of your stature in the design world. Thank-you in advance for always inspiring each of us. Those chairs are perfect.

Patricia – I purchased the linen from Haute in Arlington, VA. It's a local fabric shop. Here is the phone number: 540-364-1221. Please ask for Roxie, who will know this fabric. Sorry I don't have the maker's name – it wasn't labeled. I'll also email you this info.
The chairs are perfect Loi.
Have promised myself an afternoon in the garden today if the rain holds off!
Have a lovely day,
Liz x
The chairs are lovely! By chance, would you be willing to share the name of your upholsterer? I have an antique small comfy chair that is covered in pea green velvet 🙁 and desperately needs a makeover. It would look gorgeous given the same treatment as your chairs, right down to the feather/down cushion. My house would be so happy! Thank you in advance! Pam bellasmom35@yahoo.com
Hi Pam – My upholsterer is Designer Workroom in Bethesda, MD. Phone number: 301-656-4020. Please tell them Loi from Tone on Tone sent you. Good luck!
Thank you so much for sharing! I so appreciate it – it is much easier to get the result you want when the person you are working with already understands exactly what you want. I will definitely let them know you sent me. Thank you again!!!
Simply LOVE them!
Warmest greetings, dear Loi,
Karin
p.s. being busy/occupied as well with garden work which seems to be endless this year due to funny weather conditions.
Gorgeous Loi! Are they are soft and comfy as they look? I like the slightly overstuffed look. It creates a more casual, soft appearance that welcomes you. We are just getting into spring here in Seattle. If only the rain would stop! The rain has created a frog pond on the property that we are renovating. Drainage is going in but what a mess.
xxleslie
Gorgeous fabric! I love the neutral colors and craftsmanship.
I didn't realize you were local! I, too, have been fixing up neglected things. 3 days' worth of repotting 127 Japanese Maples and other lovely plants. Actually put a few in the ground, too! 🙂
I was wondering how you're asking for those beautiful chairs? I love their lines. The fabric is just icing on the cake!
Loi,
I have been spending hours and hours in the garden here too! I have been scanning your posts on flowers and styles for my white garden.
Love the chairs as I love everything you do!
Have Fun!
Best,
Christina
I love these chairs and would love to own them! They are beautifully done. I'm with you, out in the dirt, gardening every chance I get. Wish our yards were next to each other so we could visit at the same time! Enjoy- it's supposed to be 87 tomorrow! Turning on the AC if that happens! xo Nancy
Love, love love…Nancy and I are going to have to fight over them…I would like to own them too…
If only my garden looked like yours…so pretty!
They're beautiful, LoI, and they'll look just as elegant in their new space, that awaits them!
Have a wonderful Thursday!
xx
