Hello ~
Gosh, how time flies! This is my 100th post! Seems like yesterday when I first sat down at my desk to start this blog. I hope you have enjoyed all the antiques, collections, travel destinations, homes and gardens featured.
Speaking of gardens, I have a showstopping garden tour to share. Thanks a million to my good friend, fellow blogger and design colleague, Phyllis Higgerson of Henhurst Interiors, for this special guest post on style icon Bunny Williams’ magical garden in Connecticut. And for the giveaway – a signed copy of Bunny’s classic, top selling book: An Affair With A House.
Phyllis is a brilliant interior designer whose sophisticated work I greatly admire. Enjoy some of her projects on her website, blog and Instagram page – you won’t be disappointed!
Take it away, Phyllis!!
Last weekend I had the pleasure of touring Bunny Williams’ Connecticut garden during one of The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days in Litchfield County. It was a perfect early summer morning and a joy to explore the varied gardens that surround the house as well as viewing some of the interiors. I came away with a lot of inspiration, and I am thrilled to be sharing here today at Tone on Tone.
The property features two formal gardens (a sunken garden with a lovely water feature and a boxwood parterre), an expansive cutting and vegetable garden complex with an extraordinary chicken coop, woodland trails complete with a cool, bubbling stream, a fruit tree orchard and a classically-inspired pool pavilion with a knock-out view. Let’s begin.
Currently blooming amid clipped evergreens and boxwood spheres in the sunken garden to the left of the house were loads of alliums.
A view across the small pool filled with koi and water lilies to a field cut with trails and dotted with birdhouses.
To the right of the house is the barn, a spot for entertaining guests or finding a quiet place to read.
Two things about Bunny Williams that became readily apparent during my tour: she is the consummate hostess and her dogs are truly part of the family. They are welcome everywhere and their comfort is always considered.
The parterre garden behind the barn. The structure on the left side of the photo is the conservatory attached to the back of the barn.
On one side of the parterre is a fence that has been allowed to weather grey and is underplanted with hostas. In the center of the two far boxwood beds are dwarf Koren lilacs; in the near beds are two Italian oil jars. One of Bunny’s beloved dogs in the lower left hand corner:
A hornbeam hedge forms a wall on the other side of the parterre. At the back is a rustic pergola covered in climbing roses.
An elegant compost receptacle:
Bunny mentioned the chickens are her husband’s passion. They certainly live in high style at the aviary.
The path to the pool house through the orchard of heirloom apple trees:
The building is also equipped for entertaining with a small kitchen and bar.
It is a magical spot.
Many thanks to our gracious hostess who warmly greeted visitors, made sure we saw everything, and spent time answering questions and signing copies of her books. Much more detail about the garden can be found in An Affair With A House. And many thanks to my dear friend, Loi, for welcoming me to contribute to Tone on Tone.
For more information on visiting Open Garden Days throughout the country visit the Garden Conservancy.
Wasn’t that a lovely tour? Such incredible ornaments, structures and plantings! I love all the “outdoor rooms.” Many thanks, Phyllis!!
As mentioned, we have a signed copy of An Affair With A House to give away. Just leave a comment (one per person), and we’ll pick the lucky winner via Random.Org on July 8th at 8:00 PM Eastern time. The giveaway is open to all, and the book will be shipped free of charge.
Cheers,
Loi

Congratulations on your 100th posting, Loi, and for sharing your own beautiful house, and the many others. I enjoyed Phyllis' tour and needless to say, would love to own the Bunny Williams special edition! Mark
Bunny Williams is a woman of many talents as evident in her gardens. Thanks for sharing them, Phyllis. I'd love to read her book! And Loi, having published 100 posts is a great milestone. Well done!
I would love to have the opportunity to visit Bunny Williams' garden, but that's not likely to happen. Thanks for giving us an up close look at this lovely space. I would be thrilled to win a copy of her book if fate smiles upon me. Beautiful, generous gift, Loi. Congratulations on your 100th post!
I had the pleasure of hearing Bunny Williams speak two years ago at the Nashville Antique and Garden Show. She spoke on her friendship and professional relationship with Albert Hadley. I've never enjoyed a talk more! Bunny was entertaining with heartfelt stories of times through the years and shared some photos that were from her own scrapbook of memories. It was a treat of a lifetime for me.
Thanks again for sharing this beautiful post!
First time stopping by here and what a wonderful post to read! Congrats on 100.
It was lovely to see the photos of Bunny's home and gardens!
What a lovely "visit" to Bunny's home and gardens–so beautiful!! Thank you for the chance to win Bunny's book also. Congratulations on your 100th post on your very lovely blog…
Wow, what a treat to see Bunny's home and gardens. What and incredibly beautiful space, I wouldn't want to leave! Thank you for the beautiful photos and descriptions!
Enjoyed this post but my favorite was the one showcasing your home gardens. An inspiration!
I found your site through My Sweet Savannah and have visited several times…. beautiful site… beautiful home…. especially the heart shaped rock I saw at the edge of the small pool…
Dear Loi, it is amazing that you have just featured your 100th post, congratulations!
Much thanks to you, to Phyllis and of course to Bunny for this incredible adventure. The gardens are an absolute delight!
I would be honored to have a signed copy of Bunny's book, An Affair with a House.

Beautiful and inspiring photos, thank you for sharing Bunny Williams gardens with us. I look forward to the next garden tour. And many more beautiful posts on Tone on Tone.
Loi, this was stunning! And I can't believe it's you 100th blog post! WOW!! I have loved each and every one even when I can't comment! I could've sworn Bunny was in my shop today! No lie…I almost asked the lady but she came in saying she had laryngitis! I even thought…I bet it's a front! Who knows these days! Anyway, I love anything and everything Bunny Williams! Same goes for loving anything and everything Loi! So glad we've become friends over the years! Hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer!
As a fellow Litchfield County denizen, I feel like I should have had this book on my shelves ages ago. Bunny has a great eye.
First of all, let me greet you happy 100th Loi!!!! I need to do a lot of back reading, but so far everything you have posted have been trulywell-written, interesting, informative and always beautiful! I look forward to the next 100 more to come!
Phyllis, thank you so much for this wonderful tour, you are indeed lucky to see Bunny William's home up close – a paradise for sure, for anyone who loves anything beautiful.
Bunny Williams is a favorite and her gardens are unbelievable. I can't imagine what a treat this would be to see in person, Phyllis. Thank you for the visual feast! And Loi, congratulations on your 100th post – that's a big milestone!! I think we have been following from your start – thank you for all of the inspiration!!
that pool house is right out of a dream!
Congratulations, Loi, on 100 posts! Thanks for all the beauty you've brought to us with each and every one. And thanks so much to Phyllis for this fantastic tour. I'm going to need to go through these photos several times to take them all in. The gardens are a work of art – those are certainly some lucky chickens! – and I love the evidence of much the dogs are in the middle of it — the beds and the little guy peeking out in the corner of one of the pictures, so cute! Thanks for capturing the loveliness of it all!
Hi Loi, what a lovely surprise to see Phyllis's garden tour here! What a treat – it must have been sooooo amazing to visit Bunny and her gardens. Perfection. Lucky Phyllis!! Thanks for all the photos and description…!

I'm glad I followed your pin back from Pinterest because that is an amazing garden. I also like the picture Phyllis Higgerson included of Bunny Williams because she looks like a lady who would work in her garden. Of course I would love to read the book. Fingers crossed from across the Atlantic.
Well done Loi on your 100th post – you do visit some wonderful homes and gardens. This one is full of features that I have never come across before – the Pool House in the style of a Classical Greek Temple is extraordinary and highly imaginative, and how many hens live in such a charming coop as that.
Thanks for all the many inspiring posts Loi.Congrats congrats oh so excited for you. This is such an honor and your home so deserving. I cannot wait to see you in the next issue.
Interior Design Idea
GOod glory Loi and Phyllis, you both have planned out a knock-out post for us today! I once had the pleasure of introducing myself to Bunny Williams (I sent her a package of some of my art on cards, etc). Her home is thrilling to look at for the details (those beams…my dream!) and her gardens are exemplary. The chicken coop and pool house…again, such detail yet a very organized and simple design. The lush and clipped greenery and symmetrical gardens are to be admired. Thank you for this wonderful and magical tour! Anita
Congratulations on 100 posts! i would be perfectly happy living in Bunny's pool house, gorgeous!
Congratulations I Love your Blog and enjoyed touring Bunny's home and gardens. Thank you for such a nice give-away.

Bunny's gardens are breathtaking!!! Not to mention her gorgeous home. I so enjoyed the tour.
What a lovely giveaway!

I had the good fortune of visiting Bunny's home with the Hortus Club some years ago. The conservatory was just being built, but it promised to be magnificent. Like everything else she and John undertake, it is. Does she still have the moss-covered bench in her sunken garden? I loved that. Everything they do is beautiful, even the dog beds. We did not tour the interior of the house, only the garden, so I enjoyed seeing your pictures of some of the rooms. Her book, I am sure, will be filled with more visual delights.
Congratulations on your 100th post!
Thanks for the fabulous look into Bunny's gardens…heavenly.
The book looks amazing. Love to curl up and read and dream.
How lucky you are to have visited her property via the Garden Conservancy Open Days! I was fortunate to hear her lecture in December in Jacksonville, FL. BW is a gracious and open speaker; I truly enjoyed listening to her.

What a wonderful post, Loi & Phyllis! I love the Garden Conservancy events and go as often as I can. That bar table takes my breath away. Only Bunny could do this and make you envious. Loved every image !! Happy 100th, Loi !!
Dear Loi, Congratulations on your 100th post! I so enjoy reading your blog. I have long been a fan of soft, Gustavian interiors. They don't seem to be very popular now. Everyone seems to love modern, but to me they are sublime. Thank you for all your beautiful images.
Wonderful interview and tour Loi and Phyllis! I purchased a copy of this book several months ago as we started to build the house. It's a wonderful reference and reprieve as I live in this state of transition (construction everywhere!). Her gardens and home design aesthetic is amazing and because I am a dog-lover;) I appreciate the way she accounts for their presence. Have a nice weekend ahead Loi! xxleslie
Bunny is brilliant! I look forward to reading more on Tone on Tone!
Thanks Phyllis and Loi,
Dean Farris

your 100th post! very impressive and exciting…congratulations, loi. bunny's place is so inspiring and heavenly. i can imagine strolling through those thoughtful gardens and in my head whispering 'thank you' over and over. and isn't that what we want our spaces (especially those out in nature) to stir in us and others? it's gratitude that keeps our hearts soft and open and free to accept new blessings and true peace. bravo to those involved in creating this home which would be all too easy to have an affair with. 🙂
Love the pool and poolhouse. Could spend an endless summer out there.

Phyllis and Loi,
Thank you so much for this. I love Bunny Williams work and her grounds to her incredible home are inspiring to me, even though our yard is much smaller. The chicken coop and the compost enclosure were both unique and added so much to the overall space they encompass.
Congratulations on your 100th post…time flies, doesn't it?

Breathtaking is the word that pops to mind and beautiful, too! What we wouldn't give to have gardens like that though with our black thumbs, we'd have to hire staff. We love Bunny's book, as well. Hope you're enjoying these first days of Sunday.

As soon as the first photo popped up, (of Bunny's classic New England white clapboard w/ black shutters house) I sensed a calm, cool and lovely place. I love how she created a "fence" around her terrace via the potted boxwoods (you'd find me there every nonrainy day, sipping iced tea, enjoying the beautiful serenity surrounding her home). Ann Z (meem914@yahoo.com)
HAPPY 100TH POST, LOI!!

I find reading your blog so soothing
I have become a fan of Bunny Williams and her lovely gardens and conservatory.
Unbelievably beautiful! Have admired Bunny's work for decades. Thank you so much Phyllis for presenting such a gorgeous post! And congrats Loi on your 100 extraordinary posts! xoxo ~ Laurel
haha! I was your 100th comment on this post. :]
OK, stop the press! I am grabbing my cozzie and heading over to Bunny's place tout de suite. I love the pool house, it so me. Oh my, Pinterest here I come, its going right on my Splash board. 🙂
The armchairs in the pool house are exactly what we have been looking for our conservatory, similar examples in the UK are not nearly as deep and wide. I feel I might have to get some sent over.
Phyllis you have made my morning and I suspect I shall revisit this evening on my return home to explore this gorgeous post once more, over a glass of chilled bubbles. I might have calmed down enough to take my eyes of the pool by that time:)
Paul xoxo
PS. The photography is utterly delicious.
Can’t imagine a more wonderful home to tour. Lucky you, Phyllis. It’s so hard to pick a favorite garden feature, but I’ve no doubt your picture of the chicken aviary will become a Pinterest star. Bunny Williams just nails it every time.
Bunny Williams is synonymous with Great American Style. Her houses and gardens provide inspiration to so many of us. I was lucky enough to attend one of her presentations here in Virginia decades ago. Thank you, thank you, Bunny.
First, congrats Loi on 100 posts. I love Phyllis, and touring Bunny's garden would be a dream come true. Fantastic photography, Phyllis. I love how calm this feels. It almost makes me want to have hens.
What gorgeous gardens! Love her collected style. Thanks for the opportunity to get her fantastic book!
What a lovely home. Great pics. My dogs are allowed anywhere they like in my home too. Slipcovers rule!

absolutely stunning….thank you for sharing !!!!!!
Back for another visit, oh my it's just like looking at art, each time you look you see something different in it.
I love the barn as well, would move right into it and never want to leave. As for the compost wire bin, I wish it were mine, strange to single out something like this over all else but, the charm in its rustic euro charm steals my heart in wonderlust …. I love the stone on the lap pool, I could go on, what is there not to like in the home and garden dream??
Thank you Loi for 100 the posting of beauty.
Xx

I hoped to not be the straggler! Loi, thanks to your friend for sharing her tour of Bunny Williams' gardens – they are so calming in photos, I can't (well I actually can) imagine being there in person. A copy of of BW book would be amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Congratulations on your 100th and here's to many more!
The chicken house was the highlight for me. I can't imagine anyone calling it a "coop". Fascinating post. I used to want to come back as one of Oprah's dogs, perhaps now I should aim to come back as one of Bunnie's chickens…
Bunny Williams is my very favorite designer, and I almost missed this post because I am so busy house training a brand new puppy! I know Bunny would approve as she too adores her four footed friends:-)
Thank you for this wonderful post.
Congratulations, Loi, on your 100th post and thanks to you and Phyllis for the tour. I love the warmth and coziness of Bunny Williams' rooms. The gardens are incredible–I am going back for a second look!

Deborah
One of the best things about internet blogging is the ability to experience vicariously incredible locations such as Bunny Williams' home and her gardens. Thank you Loi and Phyllis and Loi, congratulations on your 100th post!!!.

Thanks again, and I can always use a beautiful new design book, so thank you for the opportunity to win one!

First off Loi, love your blog and your gardens! Congratulations, look forward to your next post. A few years ago, I had an opportunity to hear Bunny and have my book signed, such a wonderful day. A new puppy (Max) and a few weeks later, my coffee table book was no more. I can assure you that never happened again and Max is all grown up, now.
Cheers,
Andrea Elliott
