It’s foliage season once again in New England. Maine, which is nearly half of New England and predominately forested, is ablaze with fall colors now. Maine’s hilly terrain, red blueberry fields and water reflections all heighten nature’s brilliant display. So go see the golden birches, fiery maples and scarlet oaks at their peaks. And might I suggest a visit to our seaside town of Castine? The many historic homes, painted crisp white, are especially stunning against the vibrant hues. Here’s a quick look from our stay last week.
Hello, sunshine ๐ Happy, bold and gutsy, this sunflower-yellow door framed by whimsical trim livens historic Castine. LOVE IT! With an autumnal wreath and yellow mums, it looks especially welcoming.
Don’t miss the sugar maples on the village green where the Adams School (above) and Castine Historical Society (below) are located.
In addition to the foliage, many late summer and fall flowers (dahlias, sunflowers, mums, asters, etc.) were still putting on a show. Our hedge of 18 Limelight Hydrangeas, which we planted last summer, was covered with blooms all tinged with a dusty rose. For a casual supper with friends, I clipped an armful for an arrangement in the antique urn. I also gifted a few bunches to our friends.
We had a couple of damp, foggy days where the landscape appeared dreamlike. Good thing I had my chunky sweater, wool socks and a cup of hot chocolate ๐
Cheers,
Loi

Loi, you've really captured the magic and beauty of Maine! Fabulous photography!
Loi, these images beckon me to return to Maine in the fall. I must, I must! Thanks for sharing all this beauty. Wishing for a bouquet of your limelight hydrangeas. They are gorgeous and perfect in that urn! Have a great weekend!
So beautiful. I hope to make it to Maine in the fall eventually.
I have been patiently waiting for these photos Loi. Your home in Maine is beautiful, but your eye for photography allows us to view it all like we are flipping the pages of a magazine. I always feel relaxed in the atmospheres you create and photograph. Much love to you in this transitional season! Monica
So pretty, Loi. The last photo is amazing! And I love the yellow door on a white house with black shutters. Enjoy the season!
Claudia
Oh I love this. I was actually just wondering yesterday if we'd get an autumn update from you! I'm very glad to see this! So beautiful! I love the yellow front door, too. There is nowhere better than New England in the fall. Limelights are a lifesaver. I did flowers for a wedding last weekend and only spent $250 (!) and managed to extend that so so far with limelight fillers. Love their blush tone at this time.
Loi our trees are turning as well; however there is nothing quite like fall foliage on the East coast!!
Beautiful images!!
Have a wonderful weekend!!

Hello Loi, Once again your photos make me miss autumn in America. As I am sure you know, northern Ohio is strongly New England in character, most of the early settlers having come from there. In addition, our forests of sugar maples help put on a good fall show!
–Jim
I remember I went to visit a friend's family in northern Ohio and for the summer meal they had a clambake! that was a great surprise. I live in central Ohio and pretend it's the outer reaches of New England. We really do have more in common with New England than the actual "Midwest". My apologies to all the real New Englanders rolling their eyes. ๐
Your last photo is breathtaking; the others aren't bad either! How lucky you are to live in such beauty.
The colors are awesome! No better place to be this time of year than your little spot of Heaven! The yellow contrasts are awesome.

So beautiful Loi…and those hydrangeas, dreamy!

Loi, that is a stunning photo of the marshes dressed in fall color! I hope you are planning a book one of these days. I love the yellow door, too.

YOU just gave me a rush of pure joy dearest friend. Ruben and I just came home from a walk on the other side of downtown not far from our home, where there are the most magnificent mansions. The foliage is outstanding this year, and your photos here remind me of what we just saw. Aren't ya just lovin' this time of year? I too captured a yellow door and a fabulous home with black shutters, a yellow-leaved maple and so much more. ENJOY YOURSELVES!
Loi,
What a storybook area Castine seems to be. I love the houses you've shared and the trees are just what autumn should look like. Thank you for the tour, you and Tom have selected the perfect getaway.
xo,
Karen
I want to sell my house and move up to Maine – neighbor!
I would like to visit Castine, Maine one day. The houses are so classic and elegant. I would like to visit your house too. The fall foliage is just dreamy and magical. Happy Weekend my friend.
Breathtakingly beautiful…LOVE your yellow door, it is so picture perfect for fall! What a beautiful spot you are in:)
I adore the the house with the yellow door- so charming and the mums are the perfect complement! Love seeing your dining room – so pretty and can't think of anything quite as nice as a dinner at your table…happy weekend, Loi!!
Glorious is the word that comes to mind when look at these beautiful images. Thank you for the Fall tour!
Hi Loi, Have been missing you. Maine is so beautiful. The HYDRANGEAS are to die for. I didn't know that they could survive such cold winters.
Glad you guys had a good trip. xoxo Mary
"Autumn paints in colors that Summer never sees!" How marvelous that you of all people are in Maine and how fortunate are we to have you share your images of Maine. It is one of the most beautiful states. Have you read "Olive Kitteridge" – so very Maine…..
Enjoy your Autumnal escape…..

Very pretty, Loi! I love that yellow door and the wooden sunburst in the transom window is so charming! It is getting quite cold here too – stay warm!

Dear Loi,
I have long admired your exquisite taste but have never commented. Now I offer my compliments and pose a question! Tell me about the finish on that Cornice lantern from Circa Lighting. In your photo, it looks like a zinc-type metal, but online I don't see a match. I adore your lantern and wonder if you treated the finish or can otherwise advise? I would love one in my historic, stone farmhouse in Vermont, if I could match yours. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kate Yarbrough
i just got home from a trip to mystic, ct, and western mass to see some family and friends…. it was perfection and has left me feeling so homesick for new england and wanting to move!
Such a charming town Loi. I am so happy you and Tom are enjoying it and getting to know the town and the locals. Wonderful to be part of a such a lovely and historic small community. xox Terri
Hello,
amei a porta amarela. Esta รฉ uma das estaรงรตes mais linda. Adorei a casa e comunidade histรณrica.
Tenha um รณtimo inรญcio de semana.
Beautiful as always! There is nothing I love more than fall colors … and CRISP white houses!!
Loi, it's all so fabulous: the bold foliage, the pretty front porches, the frilly flowers in your beautiful kitchen! But, as much as I adore looking at architecture, this time, your photo of the foggy waterfront captured my heart! PLEASE print and frame this gorgeous image; it could literally pass as a painting!!
Happy Monday, my friend!

beautiful -best time of the year there ๐ well except summer…and spring! No wonder you go all that way to visit.
Castine is just majestic in the fall, love all you photographs Loi and your Dining room is so inviting and perfect!
Simply gorgeous, Loi! Our leaves are all ablaze here, too, and we're enchanted every time we leave the house for a walk or drive.

Loi these photos are magical! Fall and Maine are two of my favorite things! Your photos are fabulous as always. Thanks for sharing your beautiful images.
I love fall in Maine. It's just a shame it doesn't last longer. A couple of days of frost does everything in and I've just been outside cutting things back. We head to Houston later this week where all will be green and blooming.
Beautiful !
Hello Loi,
The colours are unbelievably vibrant. The shadows in the first image are dreamy. A big sweater, cozy socks and a cup of cocoa sounds very appropriate.
Wishing you a spectacular week
Helen xx
Loi doesn't get any more stunning than a Maine Autumn. Stunning photos I enjoyed this lovely post.

So pretty…I love all the Fall colors and that door painted yellow is wonderful!
That deep yellow paint on the front door is very popular in Maine, I've noticed. Maybe because it brightens up a white/black house. I've also seen houses painted a softer version with white trim and black shutters…so clean looking and pretty. There's nothing like New England (and parts of New York State–Hudson Valley) in October. Foliage is its middle name! Ann Z/Fairfax,VA
Beautiful imagesโฆif only it could stay this way a bit longer! Loving that door!
I'm so confused…is that your front door or a pic of a front door you admire? Regardless of the answer, it is absolutely stunning.
Your blog and photos are always a treat and I thank you for that. I live in NH and am surrounded by the vibrant foliage as well. There is not one single fall that goes by where I am not in awe of the beauty of foliage as beautiful as New England. I travel within my own stomping grounds every day and am so very thankful to take in such beauty.
Fondly,
-Lisa
Photos are exceptional, I just enjoy them. I just returned from a visit to Maine and it was so wonderful. My son took me on a great vacation, foliage was peek ,enjoyed the lighthouse and Wyeth museum among many other things. I am 74 and had never been to Maine. Would love to return someday. Thanks for all your great posts.I would love to see Castine someday.
Loi-
I love Fall, and these images are stunning. Breathtaking actually.
Thank you for sharing!
Teresa
Oh so absolutely gorgeous….and Loi, the limelights are magnificent!….Your guests must have been elated over you gifting some to them!…I would have been!…Such a most magical time of the year. I am sure you will be sad to see this beautiful Fall season give way to winter…
Pure sunny delight here with you on a autumn day… The yellow is a wonderful cheerful colour that invites you right up to the door steps.
I painted this colour on my mother in-laws door years ago, she moved to California from England and with a Yellow door she felt right at home, as it feels here with you.
Looking forward to where you will be and your postings over the ThanksGiving holidays, and then moving right into Christmas, where I will be here admiring all the beauty you inspire ๐
Can you believe I have a Friend who moved from Maine to California? I tell her all the time she was crazy,,and that I would much rather move to where she came from.
See you soon
Xoxo
